Alternative Opening Academic Year
As active sympathizer of Platform H.NU, we organise an alternative opening of the academic year at September 1st at at the Cultural Free Zone Landbouwbelang in Maastricht.
The alternative opening wants to call attention to the structural problems at Dutch Universities which affect academic personnel and administrative staff alike, as well as students and PhD candidates. The commodification of research and teaching, high workload, poor career perspectives for young employees, quantitative output measurement, growing bureaucratisation and strict hierarchies are only some of the structural problems at Dutch universities. Although some improvements have been suggested or implemented, discussion of a much needed fundamental change is missing. Platform H.NU aims to provide a space for identifying and coordinating constructive ideas from the present state of discontent in order to realise substantial change in the structure and culture of our universities.
The evening programme is intended to initiate public discussion. Short presentations by representatives of students, PhD candidates, administrative staff, labour unions, and academic staff will be followed by a discussion with the audience. There will also be live music by the Maastricht band MAASSA, DJs and drinks.
